Title: Wild Bunch Trial Stage POSTPONED till Oct Match
Post by: kid ziggy on September 16, 2018, 10:01:15 AM
Sorry .... have a commitment the 29th I had forgotten about and will not be at TMM.

Let's plan on doing the WB training and trial stage right after the Oct match.

For those interested you will need the following guns and ammo:

Semi-auto pistol... (1911 preferred) - 9mm or bigger with three magazines - 7 rounds per mag
Rifle ...  Any main match SASS rifle
Shotgun ... 1897 pump (preferred)  -  any pump or lever SG ok (up to 6 rounds in mag)

AMMO needed for stage:

Pistol ... 21 rounds (lead preferred but jacketed okay ... we will be shooting far enough away from target to remain safe
Rifle ... 10 rounds (lead)
Shotgun ... 6 rounds  (magazine will be stoked with up to 6 rounds ... extra rounds from body or table)

You might scan through the wild bunch rules (SASS main website link) if you plan to attend.  We will be following the SASS WB safety rules & loading/unloading techniques.

Thanks Ziggy! I really appreciate you doing this. Wild Bunch is something I've wanted to learn about for some time now.  It would be nice to have 3-5 folks to start with. It will take some effort to set up and make it go. After the initial in-service we will move the actual side match to the morning. Below is a link on SassNet.com to the Wild Bunch Rules.

I really hope we can get a few more folks interested.

I will try it!
I will never have a chance this close to home with relaxed gun requirements under friendly guidance and familiar territory  again!
I don't want to miss a good opportunity!

Don't worry if you do not have leather, etc ...  We will allow staging on table

Food for Thought:   One of the main safety issues for any of the pistol shooting disciplines is placing your trigger finger OUT of the trigger guard during any moving, changing magazines, drawing, clearing, etc ...

The only time the trigger finger is on the trigger is at the firing line with the gun pointed down range aimed at your target.   Once the shooting string is done for that position, the shooter must place the trigger finger outside of the trigger guard in a way that clearly shows it clear of the trigger.   This is a critical safety practice for every situation ... that we don't require in cowboy shooting.  It is why we don't have movement or start with live rounds in the chamber in cowboy shooting.

Picking up your firearm from a table,  or drawing from a holster with your finger on the trigger IS NOT ALLOWED (or safe) anywhere else!   If you only shoot cowboy action ... please work on this before the WB activity at TMM.

Most of the Norinco 97 clones will only hold 5 SG shells in the magazine.   Also, if you are going to use a modern pump like a Remington 870, you might only get 3 or 4 in the magazine.   The chamber will be empty, so you will be charging the gun after you pick it up.

Model 12 is a SASS WB legal gun.   There is an extra safety step the shooter has to do with Model 12s ... when staging shooter has to declare the model 12 to the T.O. and pull the trigger to show the gun is not cocked.  If the action makes a 'click' from the hammer dropping it is a stage DQ even though the chamber is empty.  We will be using this procedure for any pump-action SG that does not have an external hammer.  Failing to declare the Model 12 to the T.O. is also a stage DQ.

When I shot a model 12 in WB matches, I would hang a clip from the trigger guard to remind myself to declare it to the T.O.  & then remove it afterward while staging the gun.

You can purchase a modified magazine spring for the Norinco 97s that works for 6 rounds.  The stock spring stops just a hair short of allowing the 6th round.  For guns that do not hold 6, the shooter can stoke what it will hold & reload from the body for the remaining rounds.

For WB, there are no SG make-ups.   The only time you can re-load from the body to make-up a shot is when you jack a live round out of the gun.  SG targets left standing at the end of the shooting string are scored as misses.

Another FYI ... with 1911 that causes many stage DQs:

When moving & re-staging -- the pistol must be in slide lock.   Many 1911s have issues with the slide stop where the slide will not lock open after the last round is fired.   To avoid a DQ, the shooter must manually put the gun in slide lock when moving or re-staging.  The gun can't leave the shooter's hand without being in slide lock.

You do not have to drop the empty magazine when re-staging after the shooting string.   The T.O. will clear all guns on the firing line for our TMM session so the shooter can go directly to the cart after finishing the stage.

I will try to cover most of the rules you need to know in these posts before the Oct match.  That way we should be able to quickly summarize the critical rules on shooting day after the TMM cowboy match.

I looked at the SASS website link to WB.  In the rules section, there is a 2018 summary for rule changes.  I noticed some changes I was not aware of because I have not shot WB this year.   The trend has been to 'relax' some of the rules because it started out back in the day with way too many redundant safety rules mainly because of the novelty (not in a good way) of the whole idea of introducing 1911s to the mix.
